Guiding Principals

The tenets of a comprehensive health education experience are health literacy, self-management skills and health promotion. The K-12 health curriculum is designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn and practice both content and skills with regards to concepts that promote lifelong wellness.  These include:

To recognize the importance of, and describe the inter-relationship between, social, emotional and physical health.

To obtain, understand and evaluate health information and services; to integrate that information into their decisions and actions regarding their personal health.

To learn about physical changes and how the body functions.

To assume increased responsibility for their health related decisions, actions and self-care.

To understand health assessment tools, and evaluate risk potential.

To demonstrate the understanding and/or capability to respond to health concerns, including emergencies.

To improve students’ ability to communicate health information for self management and health promotion.

The Hingham Public Schools health education program is a K-12 comprehensive health education program, supported by the various components of a coordinated school health system.  A K-12 comprehensive health education program includes classroom-based instruction of curriculum in health education and physical education, as well as, integration with curriculum in counseling, life science/biology, PE and family and consumer sciences.
