The Hingham Public Schools is excited to announce the awarding of the Boston Globe Holmes Award, given to a Division 2 athletic program, to the Hingham High School Athletic program for the 4th year in a row. Hingham High’s Varsity Athletic program ranked 1st out of all Division 2 schools in Massachusetts with a winning percentage of 75.25.

The percentage was calculated by totaling all of the wins, losses, and ties of every Varsity team at Hingham High School (HHS) and dividing by the total number of games. This statistic explains that HHS won 271 games last year across all Varsity sports for a total record of 271-87-6.

“It is my hope that our entire community can feel a sense of pride in winning this award, ” said Jim Quatromoni, Hingham High School’s Athletic Director. “Parents and youth volunteers help student-athletes as young children find a passion in the pursuit of athletics. Our town provides amazing resources for us to help further that passion through interscholastic athletics. Administrators, teachers, and staff set high expectations in the classroom. Those expectations carry over to competition after school. I am fortunate to be able to see our coaches and student-athletes pursue excellence on a daily basis. I recognize the sacrifices that are made in this pursuit. I am deeply thankful that these collective efforts have been recognized once again with this prestigious award.”

Hingham High Athletics has over an 80% participation rate from students. A contributing factor is that Hingham High offers 19 MIAA sports, allowing students to try new things outside of areas other than academics. Hingham High School is also proud to offer dance, rowing, and sailing programs for students in addition to our MIAA sports. We are proud of all of our student-athletes who strive every day to exemplify the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, and perseverance.

“This accomplishment owes to the combined efforts of many coaches, staff, and student-athletes,” said Principal Swanson. “Given that eighty percent of our students participated in at least one sport last year, a very large number of them played a direct role in this award. But, in a real way, all in the Hingham community claim a piece of the Holmes Award, and that’s because the award recognizes a commitment to excellence. It can be claimed only by a school where students learn to strive, where they learn to believe in what they might become, and where they are supported in that endeavor, not only by loving parents and caregivers but also by talented teachers and coaches.”
