MINUTES OF THE HINGHAM SCHOOL COMMITTEE

April 29, 2013

Regular Session

The meeting was called to order by Caryl Falvey at 7:32 p.m. in the School Department Conference Room.

Members Present:    Caryl Falvey, Ray Estes, Carol M. Falvey, Andy Shafter, Edward Schreier, Dennis Friedman, and Paul Gannon

Central Office Present: Dot Galo, Ellen Keane, John Ferris, Elizabeth Flynn

Visitors Present:    Alec Porter, Chris Falvey, Warren Pelissier, Greg Read, Rob Delmonico, Linda Kutsch, Robert Garrity, Paul Falvey, Emily  Falvey, Bill Seymour, Eric Roise, Hugh Gorman, Carlton Chambers and Rep. Garrett Bradley

On a motion by Andy Shafter and seconded by Ed Schreier,

Voted:    To approve the Minutes of the Regular Session of April 22, 2013.

New Business.

The Committee heard an update on the status of the private fundraising activities for the High School fields.  John Ferris deposited $27,500 (donated seats) to date.  Warren Pelissier, President, Hingham Sports Partnership, reported that $670,000 to date has been raised with more donations to follow.  Caryl thanked Warren and the Hingham Sports Partnership.

The Committee discussed acceptance of donations as per Policy 1.7, Procedures 1.7A #1, 2, 3, 5, 1.7B, and 1.7C.

The Committee reviewed a Proposed Budget for the High School Fields Project.  John Ferris reviewed project cost estimates and funding (4/29/13).  School Committee asked questions and made comments:  possibility of retaining project legal counsel, Robert Garrity.

The Committee discussed strategies for ensuring alignment between the proposed budget and the available funding.

A School Committee meeting will be scheduled for May 13, 2013.

The Committee reviewed the Community Preservation Act Grant Agreement and authorized the Chair to sign it.

The Committee received information regarding an overnight field trip of four students in grades 10 and 12 to World Challenge, Peru, June 25-July 8, 2013.

The Committee received notification of the resignation of Katherine Brown, an art teacher at Plymouth River School, effective June 30, 2013.

The Committee received notification of the resignation of Megan Mahoney-Palmer, a paraeducator at Hingham Middle School, effective April 26, 2013.

The Committee received notification of the resignation of Elizabeth McInnis, a speech-language pathologist at South School, effective June 30, 2013.

On a motion by Ray Estes and seconded by Dennis Friedman,

Voted:    To engage Attorney Robert Garrity as the Hingham High School Fields Project Phase II legal counsel.

Representative Garrett Bradley read a citation in recognition of Caryl Falvey’s six years of service to the Hingham School Committee.

Superintendent’s Report.

1)    Incoming Kindergarten and Grade 1 Enrollment Status Report #3.  It is noteworthy that last year’s Kindergarten projection was at 241 and today’s is at 290.

2)    MASS memo summarizing FY 2014 Budget – DESE and Chapter 70

3)    Invitation to Century Club Dinner May 23 at 6:00 p.m. at South Shore Country Club

Carol M. Falvey presented flowers to Caryl on behalf of the School Committee and thanked her for her leadership and service to the School Committee.

Voted:    To adjourn to Executive Session, not to return to Open Session, to discuss potential litigation.
