Dot Galo announced that Doug Holley was inducted into the Massachusetts Math Hall of Fame.
Consensus of the Committee was to establish July 23 and August 20 as School Committee summer meeting dates, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
On a motion by Andy Shafter and seconded by Ed Schreier,
Voted: To approve a bid for classroom/office supplies, as recommended and detailed on the FY13 Final School/Vendor Summary dated 5/29/12.
The Committee heard an update from the Ad Hoc High School Fields Study Committee. Tim Shoyer, Chair of the Committee, reported that the recommended location of new all-purpose field will be next to the track. He summarized the options and factors considered in arriving at the recommendation: proximity to HHS, impact on various HHS neighborhoods, cost and environmental impact. The proposal will result in additional parking spaces at the far parking lot, relocation of the softball field, and additional bleachers facing the multi-purpose field. The next steps include planned public forums to discuss usage policies, site of fields, lights or no lights, synthetic or grass turf, and fundraising plans.
The Committee heard an update on the transportation bid process. John Ferris reviewed the bid process (one bid received from First Student within budgeted amount) for leasing buses.
The Committee received initial elementary enrollment projections for 2012-2013. Dot Galo reviewed the projected enrollment and stated there would be 92 sections of K-5. School Committee asked questions/made comments; overall, lower class sizes are projected for next year, but secondary staffing fell short by 1.0 additional FTE (as a result of the Program of Studies selection process); since K enrollment is flat, K staffing will be reduced by .5 FTE and the .5 FTE will be directed to the secondary level. Despite this reallocation, some secondary sections will be eliminated. Dennis Friedman suggested this should be noted as the Committee plans for FY ’14.
The Committee received notification of the resignation of Jessica Flick, a mathematics teacher at Hingham High School, effective June 30, 2012.
The Committee received notification of the retirement of Ann Gamache, a paraeducator at Foster School, effective June 30, 2012.
The Committee received notification of the alternative leave of absence for Karlyn MacBride, a grade 4 teacher at East School, for the 2012-2013 school year.
The Committee received notification of the appointment of Greg Griffin as a foreign language teacher at Hingham High School, effective August 29, 2012.
