New Foster School Opens text with new foster building beside the wording.

Hingham Public Schools is thrilled to announce the opening of the new Foster Elementary School, which welcomed students and staff on Friday, January 3rd. This state-of-the-art facility replaces the aging Foster School, a beloved space that has served generations of Hingham students since 1951.

The building is designed with modern education in mind, offering a variety of features tailored to meet the evolving needs of students and staff. The building includes collaborative classrooms, grade-level neighborhoods to encourage innovation among peers, and space to expand Hingham’s Integrated Preschool/Pre-K Program. Specialized learning areas include dedicated special education spaces, a therapeutic learning center, and a language-based classroom.

Sustainability was also a priority in the design. Features such as natural light optimization, ground source heat pumps for heating and cooling, and highly insulated building envelope help reduce rising energy costs while minimizing the carbon footprint and by operating emission-free.

Reflecting on the building project journey, Foster School Principal Matt Scheufele said “What we know about how students learn since the original Foster was built has significantly changed how we instruct our students. This new building offers state-of-the-art spaces that allow us to maximize student learning opportunities. This is a game changer for us all.”

Superintendent Kathryn Roberts shared, “The project has been an incredibly collaborative effort and has come to fruition through the time and talent of so many Hingham community members, including HPS and municipal staff, elected officials, the Hingham building committee, and the broader project team. What a wonderful way to start the new year!”

The official ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at a future date.

Hingham Public Schools celebrates this milestone as a commitment to excellence in education and the community’s shared vision for a brighter future.
