On Tuesday, January 7th, South Elementary School students and staff celebrated the inaugural "Adelia the Wonder Girl Day," established by the Hingham Select Board to honor the legacy of Adelia Szklut, a beloved second-grader who passed away last year after battling a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer. Today would have been her 9th birthday.

“Adelia the Wonder Girl,” as many came to know and love her, was admired for her bravery, kindness, and joy she brought to everyone around her. Her spirit left a lasting impact on the entire Hingham community, inspiring countless acts of kindness.

During her treatment, the Hingham community rallied around Adelia and her family, organizing fundraisers, bake sales, car parades, and filling the town with a sea of teal butterflies and rainbows.

Adelia Day was filled with activities that celebrated her spirit, including classroom kindness activities, locker affirmations, and “Buzz Awards” tied to acts of kindness within the school. This day also marked the beginning of South School’s month-long Kindness Challenge, encouraging students and staff to perform acts of kindness throughout January.

Adelia’s memory continues to inspire us to lead with kindness and courage. As South School and the Hingham community honor her legacy, we encourage everyone to mark January 7th with a special act of kindness.
