Foster Elementary School Receives Green Team Award for Environmental Stewardship

Hingham, MA – June 4, 2024 – The Healey-Driscoll Administration has recognized Foster Elementary School with a prestigious Green Team Award for its outstanding environmental stewardship. Foster Elementary is one of 63 schools across Massachusetts to receive a Green Team Award and one of only five schools honored for their exemplary efforts.

Foster Elementary’s Green Team was praised for its diverse learning approach. This is an excerpt shared from the Healey-Driscoll press release announcing the news: “The Foster Elementary School Green Team incorporated curriculum and hands-on learning through different science experiments. Students examined the effects of carbon dioxide, applying their observations to a global perspective and shedding light on the potential impacts of heat-trapping gases on the environment. They also took a proactive and introspective approach to food waste diversion through cafeteria audits and discussions, which resulted in the students identifying possible causes of food waste in their cafeterias and helped guide change in the school culture around these habits.”

“This would not have been possible without the tremendous support of our PTO and the work of Christin Eigenmann, the parent leader of our Green Team,” shared Foster Elementary School Principal Matt Sheufele. “I am so proud of the members of our Green Team.”

“We are so proud of Foster’s Finest who are becoming early stewards of the environment and champions within their school for caring for our community,” acknowledged Margaret Adams, Superintendent. “We are so grateful to our families who helped shepherd this student leadership opportunity forward.” 

The Green Team Awards, sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) and the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA), celebrates schools implementing effective environmental initiatives.
