CAREER SEARCH INFORMATION

JOB SEARCH TIPS

Do not be shy. Tell everyone you are looking for a job. Many jobs are not advertised and you may be able to get a good job lead from a family member or friend.

Clean up your social media pages. If you are active on social media, make sure your pages represent someone who is responsible and hirable. Hiring managers can and do screen potential employees by observing their online presence.

Keep an open mind. Try not to limit yourself to certain types of jobs. The more flexibility you have, the more opportunities you will be able to apply for. Even if a particular job is not your first choice, it may turn out better than expected.

Write a resume, even if the employer is not requesting one. A resume can help you stand out from the competition. Even if you don’t have much information to include, a resume shows that you are serious about your job search.

Secure references. References can be teachers, counselors, former employers, etc.

Job search online. Check websites that list local job openings. You can use job search engine sites such as indeed.com and search by keyword and location.

Apply to lots of jobs. Apply for as many jobs as possible. Keep applying, you could be missing out on a great opportunity that you did not even realize existed.

Expect an instant interview. If you are filling out or dropping off an application, always be prepared for an on-the-spot interview in case the hiring manager can meet with you right away. Dress appropriately and make sure to practice a few interview questions beforehand. Also, be sure to bring materials that the hiring manager may need, such as driver’s license, resume, list of references, etc.

Follow up. You should always follow up when searching for a job. If you meet with a hiring manager in person, be sure to send a thank you note to express your appreciation for the interview. If you submit an online application, you may call 7-10 days to check on the status of your application.

HHS CAREER EXPLORATION

The Post-Secondary Planning Office at Hingham High offers a variety of career workshops and events throughout the year. The Career Exploration event in early spring offers students a chance to listen to professional speakers from different career fields (i.e. nursing, military, finance, emergency services). These speakers offer insight into their daily responsibilities, educational backgrounds, and training involved in their professions. Students have the opportunity to ask questions and learn about how to get a head start in preparing for their futures.

A job fair is an event with numerous employers in one place. The high school holds a job fair in May to showcase local job and volunteer opportunities for teens. Students are able to connect with company representatives instead of just mailing in or submitting a resume online.

Tips for attending a job fair:

Dress as if you were going on an interview

Bring multiple copies of your resume

Know (or have with you) all the information you will need to fill out a job application

Have names and phone numbers of at least 3 professional references with you

Practice with friends ahead of time introducing yourself (including shaking hands) to employers

Research any employer who you are interested in working for

Look neat and clean

Bring business cards (if you have them)

Be prepared to talk positively about your skills and abilities

Know what types of jobs you’re interested in pursuing

JOB BOARD & RESOURCES

A job board for students is located directly across from the door to enter the guidance department. Students should check this regularly for information about local job opportunities, career-related workshops, and other events.
